Osteoporosis

What Is It?

Simply stated, osteoporosis is a condition where the bones thin and become fragile. This fragility makes them more susceptible to fracture, even with little or no stress applied. It is reported that approximately 54 million Americans have osteoporosis and low bone mass, or pre-osteoporosis, known as osteopenia. According to the World Health Organization, criteria for bone density (called T-scores) for adult women are:

T Score:

  • 0 to -1: Normal Bone
  • -1 to -2.4: Osteopenia
  • -2.5 & Below: Osteoporosis
  • Below -2.5 in presence of fracture: Severe Osteoporosis

How We Treat It

First, we offer opportunities to prevent bone thinning or fragility from starting and progressing through bone health classes dedicated to active aging and the potential involvement in our EnerG by Aegis wellness programs. This includes the use of progressive resistive equipment and training on what movements to avoid, in addition to specialty exercises like osteogenic loading with bioDensity™ and whole body vibration with PowerPlate®. Second, should an osteoporotic fracture occur and you need rehabilitation to restore your activities of daily living (ADLs), mobility or stability with proper bracing, we will work with you and your physicians to plan the most effective program for your recovery. Bone thinning is not based solely on one cause and our interdisciplinary approach, including dietary needs, pharmacology considerations to strengthen your bones, safe and effective exercise training, task modification and education on movement safety, provides you with life lessons to resume hobbies and recreational activities while protecting and enhancing your quality of life.

What You Can Expect

Poor bone health is costly to you and the healthcare system. Not only due to bone fractures but due to associated pain, loss of function, risk of falling, and decline in overall mobility and quality of life.

In partnership with Aegis Therapies, we work with you and your primary physician in a two-fold manner to address this risk of poor bone health and diagnosis of osteoporosis.
