Stroke

What Is It?

When blood is blocked or no longer supplied to areas of your brain it results in brain cell death and what is commonly called a stroke. Medically, this is referred to as a cerebral (brain) vascular (blood supply) accident (not planned), or CVA for short. It is reported to be the fifth leading cause of death in the United States by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. It is the leading cause of long-term disability; however, it is also the leading preventable cause of disability. You may have seen some of the advertisements around warning signs of a stroke: F (face numbness or drooping) A (arm weakness) S (speech difficulties) T (time to call 911). Early detection and action to seek medical attention is key to reducing the impact of the stroke and aiding your recovery.

How We Treat It

At Salude, we support your needs for stroke prevention and recovery. Whether it’s through education on the factors to reduce the risk of a stroke, or active rehabilitation in recovery post stroke, we work with Aegis Therapies to provide patient-centered care focused on your goals to return to an active, productive lifestyle.

  • Treatment may include occupational therapy for memory and sensory retraining or interventions to restore your basic life skills such as feeding, bathing and dressing.
  • Physical therapy may assess your strength, balance and mobility skills to restore gait (walking) and transfers.
  • Speech therapy will address speech production (talking), speech comprehension and reading skills, in addition to assessing the muscles associated with swallowing so your favorite meals can be safely modified as you recover.

What You Can Expect

Our commitment to innovation and technology is evident through our use of modalities (electrical stimulation) and new advances in muscle strengthening with the use of Swallow Strong®, Vital Stim® and eSwallow® technology.
